| To reduce reliance on expensive imported anchors from France, the Imperial Dockyard established specialized anchor workshops in 1708. This allowed the empire to independently produce heavy anchors (up to 4,211 kg) for its expanding fleet. Good anchors provided 18th-century Ottoman ships with crucial capabilities for survival, combat, and trade. They allowed galleons and warships to hold position in strong currents, ride out Mediterranean storms, and secure themselves near enemy coastlines during naval blockades or sieges. | |
