Built to protect the trade routes in and out of Wilmington, North Carolina, Fort Fisher is the largest coastal fort in the Confederacy. Her combination of long range naval rifles and inland facing smaller cannonade as well as her pair of naval mortars makes Fort Fisher a difficult obstacle to any Union advance on Wilmington from the sea.
