The Mahmudiye was a legendary 128-gun, masted ship of the line in the Ottoman Navy. Launched in 1828 and built at the Imperial Shipyard in Istanbul, it was the largest warship in the world for many years. Commissioned by Sultan Mahmud II, the roaring-lion figurehead and massive scale were designed to boost national morale after the devastating loss of the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Navarino in 1827.
